Founder Clyde May was born in 1922, and as a young man, he was part of the Army's 77th Infantry Division during World War II, where he was wounded. In 1946, Clyde May began distilling and making a moonshine that quickly became known and sought after in the state of Alabama, where he operated – though perhaps not entirely legally. Consequently, Clyde May was imprisoned for 8 months in 1973, and immediately after his release, he started a new distilling apparatus. The story has a happy ending, as in 2001, Clyde May's became the first whiskey brand in the US to be designated as the first official "state spirit" in the USA: the Official State Spirit of Alabama™.
Clyde May's Straight Rye Whiskey is distilled in a copper pot still and aged in new American oak barrels for a minimum of 4 years. The aroma reveals notes of flowers, honeysuckle, and apricot. The taste and finish are soft and complex with spices (black pepper and oak spices), citrus, and tannins. Non-chill filtered. 46% - 70 cl.
