In countries like Barbados, Jamaica, and Guyana, there are strict rules that state that the youngest rum in the blend must indicate the age on the bottle. In other countries, such as Martinique and Guadeloupe, the French V.S./V.S.O.P./X.O. system, also known from cognac, is used to describe a rum's age.
In many Spanish-speaking rum countries, the solera method is used. For solera-aged rums, the opposite principle applies – here, the age of the oldest rum in the blend is what's stated on the bottle. And there is no requirement for what proportion of the blend the oldest rum must constitute.
Finally, whether a rum has been aged in a tropical or continental climate has a significant impact on its age. It is said that a rum ages 3 times faster in a tropical climate than it does in a continental climate. This means that a rum aged 8 years in a tropical climate can be compared to a rum aged 24 years in a continental climate.
