The 4 (5) gin types

Gin producers distinguish between 4 different types of gin: London Dry, Plymouth Dry, Old Tom and Genever. In addition, there is a 5th type, which are gin-based products such as gin liqueur, sloe gin, and fruit gin. However, these are often not called gin, as the alcohol content is too low for that designation.

But let's start from the beginning, because what does it actually take for a gin to be a gin? Like vodka, gin is produced from a neutral spirit made from grains such as rye, barley, wheat, or corn. During redistillation, all the botanical ingredients are added together, and this is where gin truly distinguishes itself from vodka. The botanical ingredients can be dried herbs, roots, and citrus peels, but one ingredient is necessary for a gin to be gin. Juniper berries.

Juniper berries are to gin what grapes are to wine. It is the juniper berry that gives gin its characteristic taste, and it is in fact so important that the name of the drink comes from the French word for juniper, genièvre, changed by the Dutch to genever, and shortened by the English to gin.

London Dry Gin

One might think that a London Dry Gin must be produced in London, but that is not necessarily the case. The name refers instead to style and production method. A London Dry Gin must not have more than 0.1 gram of sugar added per liter and may only have water added – no artificial color or flavor. Some London Dry Gins are infused with fresh citrus peels or dried peels before distillation, which gives them a bright and citrusy flavor. Therefore, a lemon peel can really work wonders in, for example, a martini and bring out all of these notes even more. A London Dry Gin typically has an alcohol percentage of at least 45%.

Plymouth Gin

Unlike London Dry Gin, Plymouth Dry Gin is a protected geographical indication that may only be used for gin that comes from this area. Plymouth Gin typically has more roots among its botanicals and therefore tastes more 'earthy' than London Dry Gin, but is consequently not as dry. Plymouth Gin typically has an alcohol strength of 41.2%.

Old Tom Gin

Old Tom is a gin recipe that was popular in 19th-century England but later disappeared from the market. The name refers to signs with a black cat (Old Tom) that hung outside certain pubs in England. Here, it was supposedly possible to get a shot of gin for a small fee at a time when the government was trying to curb gin drinking with exorbitant taxes and prohibitions. Old Tom Gin has become popular as a somewhat 'underground' ingredient in cocktails and is slightly sweeter than London Dry Gin, but drier than Dutch genever.

Genever

Genever is the original Dutch gin, based on distillate from malted barley – just like whiskey. Genever is also flavored with juniper and is produced in the Netherlands, Belgium, and certain parts of France and Germany. Genever is available in an old style (oude) and a young style (jonge). Oude is, as the name suggests, the original genever, which is golden, sweet, and aromatic, while Jonge is drier and lighter. There is also genever that has been aged in oak barrels for 1-3 years. Genever has a slightly lower alcohol content at 36-40%.

Gin liqueur and other gin-based products

Then, of course, there are all the gin-based products. They are often sweet and fruity, which makes them popular both as a casual drink and as an ingredient in various cocktails.

Gin liqueur

Gin liqueur is gin that has been aged with berries or fruits for a period of time, then filtered and had sugar added. Gin liqueurs typically have an alcohol content between 17.5 - 30%. Foxdenton makes delicious gin liqueurs with, for example, raspberry and plum.

Sloe gin

Sloe gin is gin infused with sloe berries. The sloe berries are picked after the first frost – or frozen before use – so that the bitter compounds in the berries are converted into flavor and sugar compounds. The gin is filtered and sugar is added, combining the fruity taste of sloe berries with juniper. Sloe gin has a beautiful red color and typically an alcohol content of around 26-30%.

Pink gin and fruit gin

Fruit gin refers to gin that has been distilled with fruits and berries. This could, for example, be apples and pears, strawberries, rhubarb or elderflower, which help to give a special color (pink gin) and taste. Fruit gin typically has an alcohol content similar to regular gin, i.e., a minimum of 37.5%.
