The Story of Black Tot Day - When the Royal Navy Said Goodbye to Rum
Imagine working in extreme conditions at sea, surrounded by weapons, machinery, and the British weather. Your daily reward? A splash of dark, strong rum. Also known as a "Tot," British slang for a ration.
That was the reality for sailors in the Royal Navy for over 300 years!
But all good things come to an end. On July 31, 1970, the unthinkable happened. The British fleet poured the last official rum ration. The day became known as Black Tot Day, a sad (and perhaps a little tipsy) anniversary for the world's sailors and rum lovers.
A tradition is born
It all began in 1655, when it became too cumbersome to haul tons of beer to sea. So instead of beer, sailors received half a pint of rum (284 ml) a day. Not a bad deal!
But as the years went by, it turned out that strong rum and long periods at sea rarely lead to good discipline, but rather to fights and seasick, ill-advised decisions. Therefore, in 1740, a clever admiral named Edward Vernon came up with the idea of mixing rum with water, and voilà: grog was born.
In the 19th century, the fleet slowly began to cut back on the liquid pleasures. The rum ration was first halved, then halved again, and finally it was completely dropped for officers and later for everyone else.
But it wasn't until 1970 that the last tot was poured. And it was done with style. Sailors wore black armbands, the ration was symbolically buried at sea, and some even poured out their rum in protest (which in itself should be a punishable offense!) Instead, they got... an extra beer. Not quite the same, right?
The Afterlife of Rum
Although the daily tots are long gone, the tradition lives on. Every year on July 31, rum fans worldwide mark Black Tot Day with a glass of navy strength rum, just as it was drunk back then: dark, strong, and with respect.
Collectors even hunt for the original bottles that survived the last days of the rum ration. Imagine drinking a dram that a sailor in 1970 might have saved in his sea chest!
Today, several brands make authentic navy rum blends.
What is a Pusser?
In the British Navy, "the Purser" was, in sailor's slang, called "Pusser" and was the officer responsible for distributing supplies such as food, clothing, and... rum!
But how could the sailors be sure that their daily rum ration had not been diluted by a greedy Pusser?
The solution: They mixed a little gunpowder into the rum and tried to light it.
If it ignited and burned with a blue flame, it was proof that the rum had a high enough alcohol content, at least 57% alcohol.
If it didn't light, the rum was too weak, and the Pusser could expect trouble.
Black Tot Rum – Finest Caribbean is a rum blend from Barbados, Guyana, and Jamaica. It is aged in the tropics, which gives a more intense flavor in a shorter time.
The flavor profile combines tropical fruits, coffee, and chocolate, and the rum is suitable for both sipping neat and in cocktails.

British Royal Navy Rum contains One Imperial Gallon = 4.54 liters, and this rare bottle is from approx. 1970, when the British Navy on July 31 ended the daily serving of rum to sailors. There are still some of these original British Royal Navy Rums from that time, and the packaging is extraordinary.
