Penderyn The Headliner Icons of Wales Single Malt Whisky

The Icons of Wales whisky series from Penderyn features very special bottlings that commemorate a particular event or an important person of international significance in Welsh history.

This unique Penderyn The Headliner Welsh Single Malt Whisky is the 9th edition in the Icons of Wales series. The whisky is matured in Jamaican rum casks and Ruby port wine casks.

When nosing Penderyn The Headliner Welsh Single Malt Whisky, notes of red berries, strawberries, cream, cranberries, light oak, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon spice are perceived. The taste is rich and sweet with notes of dried fruits, salted caramel, floral honey and black pepper with a tannic dryness.

The bottle honours the only Welsh Prime Minister and social reformer, David Lloyd George (1863-1945), who inadvertently established the "premium whisky" industry. David Lloyd George became a symbol of the national awakening of Wales, and he created more headlines than any other statesman of the 20th century. During World War I, David Lloyd George realized that excessive drinking was doing more damage to the population than all enemy submarines combined. He therefore introduced a law on immature spirits in 1915, he tried to raise taxation, and he created opening hours to limit the amount of alcohol available to workers. Reputable whisky producers matured their whisky in oak barrels, but some
unscrupulous producers sold immature spirits directly from the still. The rule that "proper whisky" had to be in a cask for a minimum of 3 years and 1 day helped create a premium product, and as the preference for the new, mature whiskies gradually spread, the whisky industry was revived.
