Catherine Marshall 2022 Riesling

Catherine Marshall Riesling is a super lovely Riesling from South Africa made in the German Rheingau style. Scent of apples with a taste of citrus fruit and green apples with spicy undertones, light acidity, and a nice long aftertaste. Currently has a 3.8 rating on Vivino.

Catherine Marshall Riesling has aromas that are sweet yet persistent, bright, fresh lime, crisp apple, beeswax and wild honey. On the palate, there is a fresh acidity that is well-balanced by fruit sweetness and supported by the mineral texture from the slate soils, leading to a long, intense, sorbet-like finish. A truly delicious glass, perfect with, for example, fjord shrimp or sushi.

Riesling grapes are perfectly suited for cold climates. As Elgin has a cool daytime climate and cold nights during the growing season, it is perfectly suited to produce a Cape version of the famous German "Mosel" style.

What began as a celebratory foot-stomping with a handful of friends on a beach in 1996 paved the way for the founding of the first true micro-winery in the Western Cape, South Africa, with a focus on Pinot Noir. After researching vineyards throughout the Western Cape, the decision was made in 2007 to primarily source grapes from the cool climate of Elgin and Hemel-en-Aarde Valley for Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Chenin Blanc, as well as warmer locations for the red wines.

Catherine Marshall Wines focuses on complexity and ripe yet restrained fruit by carefully selecting and blending clones grown on sandstone soils in the cool Elgin area. Emphasis is also placed on maximizing layered flavor profiles, balanced with seamless tannin extraction. This is achieved through a minimalist and natural approach with attention to the integrity of varietals, specifically grown on lighter, sandstone soils.
