A historic Lowlands distillery with a modern revival
Annandale Distillery is located in Annan, Dumfries & Galloway in the Lowlands region of Scotland, and boasts a rich history dating back to 1836, when it was founded by George Donald.
For over a century, Annandale produced whisky until production ceased in the early 20th century. Production resumed in 2014 when the distillery was acquired and restored by Professor David Thomson and Teresa Church – a passionate couple dedicated to bringing this Scottish gem back to life.
Unique focus: Single Cask, Single Malt
Annandale takes pride in its Single Cask Single Malt approach. This means that every single bottle of whisky comes from one specific cask instead of being blended from several. This provides a unique and authentic taste experience, allowing you to truly appreciate what the specific cask has contributed to the whisky's character.
Two distinctive expressions
Annandale primarily produces two types of single malt:
Man O’ Words – an unpeated, fruity, and elegant whisky, inspired by the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns.
Man O’ Sword – a peated whisky, named after the Scottish warrior king Robert the Bruce, offering depth, smoke, and complexity.
Both expressions are often bottled at cask strength, are non-chill filtered, and boast natural colour, a testament to uncompromising quality and a focus on authentic whisky expression.
Craftsmanship and quality in focus
Annandale employs a special distillation process, where twin copper spirit stills, designed in collaboration with whisky expert Dr. Jim Swan, help remove unwanted sulphurous compounds and promote a clean, balanced whisky that matures in selected casks.
The distillery's storage conditions and microclimate in the historic warehouses are ideal, and each cask tells its own unique story in the flavour.
Annandale is not just a distillery – it's a place you can visit, experience, and taste whisky directly on site. There is a visitor centre offering tours and tastings, and our upcoming Annandale Whisky Master Class tasting is a unique opportunity to delve even deeper into both history and flavour nuances.
