Port Charlotte PMC:01 Single Malt Whisky

Port Charlotte PMC:01 has its roots in 100% Concerto barley. During the malting process, it reaches a peat level of 40 parts per million (PPM). It was distilled in 2013 and then spent 4 years in Bourbon casks; in 2017, the spirit was transferred to Pomerol casks, where it continued its maturation process for another 5 years. With an alcohol content of 54.5%, it is both powerful and rich in flavour.

Port Charlotte PMC:01 is a story of place. This sixth release in the Cask Exploration series is from the 2013 vintage and is deeply influenced by the rich, fruit-laden oak of Pomerol wine casks - adding depth and complexity to this single malt. This release marks the first time Port Charlotte spirit has been matured in Pomerol casks, and the result is truly something special. The quality of the oak combined with the versatility of the whisky is remarkable, and the flavour celebrates both the wine region's cask and the spirit's full Islay maturation. It highlights the harmonious balance between oak, rich fruit, and mild peat smoke - an unforgettable single malt.

Port Charlotte believes in creating whisky that speaks of the place it comes from. When their distillery was revived in 2001, their founders were in disbelief at the clear separation between their raw material and the industry's lack of consideration for where it was grown, who grew it, and how.

Terroir is crucial to the flavour of Port Charlotte's single malt, and this next whisky in the Cask Exploration series, PMC:01, has spent the second half of its maturation in Pomerol casks from Bordeaux's "right bank." A region that directly influences the taste of its grapes, which become exceptional red wines. The wines from here proudly refer to their place of origin, benefiting from the warm climate and the famous blue clay, gravel, and sand of the appellation to impart a fresh yet rich silkiness.

The colour of Port Charlotte PMC:01 is reminiscent of hazelnut, and as you approach, you are met by an aroma of warm peat smoke and red fruits, which shifts to stewed pears, melon, and a subtle sea breeze. Delicate floral notes of roses and geranium emerge, with hints of vanilla, honey, leather, and toasted oak from the wood. As the whisky opens up further, a subtle spice blend of clove and ginger comes to the forefront, accompanied by a touch of marzipan.

On the palate, malt sugar and peat smoke complement the impressive viscosity of the liquid, which coats the mouth. The influence of the cask continues, highlighting the harmonious balance between oak and fruit, with juicy blackberries, plum, and aged leather emerging.

In the finish, mild maritime notes, crushed seashells, and a hint of citrus from lemon peel are felt, referring to the whisky's full Islay maturation, while Port Charlotte's signature peat smoke lingers. 54.5% - 70 cl.
